History Lesson

When we did the Trikini 6.47 performance was not a telling issue. With 4 berths, a diesel inboard and 6 ft of headroom it was equal to a 30′ monohull but not a fast boat

We had a stripped out prototype that we sailed that was faster, but with the memory of the TRIKINI D it just was slow. When we used the Main hull as part of the Catfisher 34, we had a set of OR. CA and mast and rigging.

We designed a more performance oriented vessel the Trikini 7.92 ; and did a really good mold for it, built one hull and were working on the deck plug when the business sort of collapsed and the project died. The mold was transported to Hernando County and developments there lead to it’s destruction in 1986.

Before then we decided to combine the parts from the 6.47 and the 7.92 into a one off. It turned out to be 23 ft (7.01 meters).

The vessel was sold to a FL/PA resident (snowbird) and he sailed it for many years. Being a gadgeteer and never getting the hang of the cutter rig, he initiate many modifications. Moving the mast forward and going to a sloop rig. The reinforcing structure he installed basically ruined the interior.

The Party in MI got it in 1991 and many things such as the CA adjustment system and rigging were changed (and not for the better) so he really never had a chance to appreciate it as designed

In a million to one shot, we discovered the original cutter main sail at Bacon and Associates and bought it back. Plans are to restore it to the cutter rig

The 23 was designed to be a mini Trikini D at 2/3 the size. Now the original 6.47 had a 30 ft. mast The production and the 23 had a 24 ft mast. That reduction while economically sound( mast and boom came from one blank) was never one I was happy with. I have a section of the mast section and a sleeve and will extend the mast to 30 ft again.

All the turnbucles are jammed and frozen and many of the rigging wires have been reswagged but the ends have been left with wire spurs and will be redone

We intend to shorten the rear cabin and move the cockpit aft and extend the cabin top aft to give two wing berths. Part of me wants to remove the wings and cabin entirely but since the wings are needed to support the swing wing will leave the cabin on.

One other thing to be changed is the OR dihedral. with the lower freeboard on the Trikini 7.01 compared to the 6.47 the OR’s are not clear of the water in the Double Outrigger configuration we prefer.

So the work on the 23 rebuild really is a redesign but should produce a much faster mini-cruiser related more to the D than the 6.47. In the interum there are some prblems getting a clear title established but more on that problem later.
