Swimming in the marina :)

Patty dropped her second radio in the water yesterday.

I put fins and a mask on and went looking for it today but it must be one of the lighter ones that the current could drag off. She dropped it in about 9 ft of water so it should have been right there. I spent about 10 minutes doing sweeps under her boat and the dock but did not find it.

At about  10 minutes in the water it went from burning cold  to starting to feel  warmer 🙂 so I knew my time in the water was up. Full on hypothermia is not a good thing to get so i popped out and got dry and then slugged back a big mug of hot apple cider.  I was right as rain in just a couple minutes after that. I also put one of those hand warmers in my shoe, that helped my body warm back up also.

I would estimate the water temp is in the high 50’s maybe low 60’s.

  • Swimming in marinas can also be very hazardous to your health if the marina or one of the nearby boats has a problem with AC leakage into the water. There was a story not too long ago about a boy named Lucas who was killed by swimming in his marina.

Hypothermia is also really nasty stuff. However, IIRC, warming up the extremities in cases of hypothermia is generally not recommended. Doing so can can cause blood to rush to the extremities, and can cause serious complications. You’re generally much better off trying to warm the body core using blankets and hot drinks.

  • I’m not to worried about AC leakage. The odds are pretty low.

Hypothermia is a bigger worry. However I worked as a commercial diver (summer and winter) for years as well as have had lots of training and experience in extreme cold weather conditions. I know exactly how far I can go with exposure to cold. 10 minutes in the water the other day and I could check off in my head the different effects on my body as the cold started to affect my body. First sensation wise then functionally. I got out before my strength or dexterity started to degrade. 🙂 I also had two people standing by on the dock just incase I misjudged.

Yes heating the extremities can be bad 🙂 if you over do it. 🙂 taking hand warmers or foot warmers and putting them in  gloves or shoes is a nice gradual way of warming the body. Imersing your arms and legs in hot water is over doing it 🙂 It’s a matter of surfice area and btu transfer over time. If you can use the word gradual about it your probably safe 🙂
