Santana 21 Glidden paint Job

In the fall of 2003 I painted my Shock Santana 21 topsides with Glidden porch and deck paint from Lowes or Home Depot.. I forget which. I used a fine roller and for the non skid areas added the non-skid powder they sold there for a couple bucks a pack. I mixed it into the paint before rolling it on. This seemed to work well and the finish was sand paper non skidish 🙂 Here is the link to the original post when I painted her. I recently got a comment from a new Shock Santana 21 owner and in a followup email he asked me how the paint had stood up.

Comes Around Goes Around Back to the water :)

Well Comes Around Goes Around is finally getting back ship shape. She has been abandoned in the yard all spring and summer as I have been sailing with Patty on Sea Puppy and helping there with projects for Sea Puppy. I have to admit that Sea Puppy is a nicer and bigger boat to sail on. With better and more comprehensive sail handling gear, more sails, and being able to sail her out of the slip, she is much more convenient to sail than Comes Around Goes Around who requires you to tow her to a landing then step the mast and mount the rudder and engine. Quite a process for a day of sailing. Under ideal conditions your looking at an hour and a half total to put her together and then break her down for a days sailing.

Spring overhaul 2

Well I finally got the keel cable fixed on “Goes Around Comes
Around” my Santana 21. It was a bugger! Very stupid design. You have to
take the keel off the boat toput a new cable on. you could put a
new one on if the old one was still there I guess but mine snapped
about 8 inches from where it attaches to the swing part of the keel.

The keel is cast iron and weighs in at 550 lbs so it isn’t
something that you just throw around. I took the boat to the Prop Shop
over in Little River and with the help of Richard and (Larry the owner)
we put it on the boat lift and lifted the boat off of the keel. Leaving
the keel on the trailer so we could then move it from under the boat to
work on it. In the below picture you can see it after we pulled the
trailer out from uder the boat and she is hanging in air before we put
supports under her.

Spring Cleaning

Comes around, Goes Around got cleaned to within an inch of her life
today. I pressure washed her off outside and inside. Scrubbed all i
could easily reach of her inside with soapy clorox water then hit her
with the pressure washer inside to rinse. Used the bilge pump to pump
water out. and then sopped up the rest of the water with some towels.
Left hatches open for two days and she dried out nice. One of the nice
things about a boat with very little wood on her. I also took
everything off the boat before cleaning. there was a lot of little
stuff that had migrated to her. 🙂

Spring overhaul of Goes Around, Comes Around started

Well I have started working on Goes Around, Comes Around my Shock Santana 21.

  1. Put new jack on front of her trailer today. The key in the
old ones gears sheared and it was easier to just replace whole thing. I
got one that is twice as strong as the old one also. It was kinda
    wobbly.
  2. Pulled her out into yard and put mast up so that it
is easier to inspect everything and to access the cabin and cockpit to
    work on her.
  3. Took a look at the swing keel cable. She will
need to be in the water for me to reach it to replace the broken one. I
have to work out some method of keeping the keel up while i put her in
water and then lowering it without just dropping it all at once.
  4. Need to install the solar panel I got last yea
  5. would like to get a couple big AGM batteries and a trolling motor to power her
  6. I have a two battery switch to install
  7. Interior of boat needs cleaning
  8. Sails need cleaning
  9. All rigging needs to be inspected
  10. Need to pressure wash the hull and decks.
  11. set out all gear and figure out stowage areas for it all.
  12. Install gear hammock
  13. make new door for under sink and install that
  14. finsh fixing table and re-install that.
  15. Build v-berth extension over center walkway. Storage under it,,, maybe put portapottie under it?
  16. Need to find leak in deck window seal or around companionway that water gets in when it rains
  17. Need to overhaul the drop boards in door. maybe make out of plexi-glass

Murrels Inlet Sail part two

I forgot to mention what I had used as an anchor light. I bought a battery powered light/lantern at Wall Mart for about $2.50 that runs on 4 AA batteries. However I found that the life span of the batteries is only about 4 hours maybe a little less. It is bright and 360 degress though. I did a little research and found that you can buy a LED replacement bulb that replaces the normal bulb and gets much better power consumption according to several websites that sell them. Prices ranged from 12 dollars to about the mid 20’s for them.

Murrels Inlet Sail

It was the best of times and the worst of times 🙂 lol now that I have the plagerism out of the way I will just call it an interesting time.

Patty and I took the boat out Saturday night at Murrels Inlet, SC. and came back Sunday afternoon. Technically we did this, but not quite according to the plan. The plan was to be on the water about 4 or 5 saturday afternoon and take our time finding a place on the marsh behind Murrels Inlet to anchor for the night. Watch the sunset and just generally kick back. Well life being what it is we didn’t get to my house to pick the boat up till 5pm, 45 minutes of prep-time later we are on the road.

Anchored out at Bird Island

Comes around, Goes around has been sitting in a slip for the last couple weeks because I needed to work on the trailer. It seemed like a good excuse to sail more 🙂 no set up or take down at end of the day, just throw off the lines and head out.

I was really wanting to get out for a while so me and Patty took the boat out friday evening and motored down the inland waterway to Bird Island and anchored out. 🙂 I hung a small coleman lantern from the rigging for a anchor light ( note this doesn’t work very well as it tends to go out after a few hours. It works good for light while your up though.) A two burner propane stove in the back of the cockpit works great 🙂 hot tea and chocolate on demand 🙂

Sailboat Parade

Sailed Comes Around Goes Around in the Sailboat parade.. we sailed south down the coast and then back up for a downwind upwind course.. did quite well downwing and then lost ground to the bigger boats upwind as the breeze stiffened. still was maybe 6th out of 11 boats finishing.

Update on the Goes around, Comes around

Lots of more work on the “Goes around, Comes around” I’m not sure I even remeber what all I have done.

First I welded in a replacement keel guide on the trailer and painted that. I also remounted the leg on the front of the trailer.

Installed a battery and distribution panel. I don’t think that she ever did have a distribution panel before. I cut out a hole and mounted the panel. Then repaired and rewired the running lights. I still don’t have an all around white light. The mast never did have a light mounted on the masthead. After getting the running lights working and remounted I installed 4 led arrays around the top of the post in center of cabin that the mast is above up on deck. Not very bright but at night they light up the entire cabin. I still have to wire the sump pump up to the distribution panel. It is run from a portable battery unit at the moment. Distribution panel $36, 4 led arrays $ 60, misc wire, connectors, and bulbs $30.

Working on the Goes around, Comes around

I finally feel as if I’m getting there with Goes Around Comes Around
the 21 ft Shock Santana sailboat I bought ($1300 for boat, trailer and
4hp longshaft outboard) in the end of July.So far I have varnished all
outside wood on it, including the tiller and rudder. I have painted the
top decks with a good oil based floor/deck paint. Glidden $16 a
gallon stuff. It seems to have worked very well. (it even specified on the label that it was suitablefor painting boat decks) I got a light tan/sand
color for the no skid areas and a gloss white for the rest of it. It
was white decks and dark blue on the no skid before. It was very hot in
the sun on the blue, you couldn’t walk bare foot on it during the day.
Now it is very cool even in the hot noon sun.
